this all started as an innocent attempt to save a couple bucks and buy things in bulk. what it turned into was little plastic bags full of grains and seeds strewn throughout our pantry that were difficult to deal with.

“difficult to deal with” may be an overstatement, but i don’t like trying to get 1/2 a cup of flour out of a plastic bag. call me spoiled. i want it in a jar. so we started saving jars from jams (so much jam is consumed in our house, it’s really quite remarkable), and it became this:

now can you tell the difference between beans in jar #1 versus jar #2? i can. but only because i remember that i bought significantly more of one than the other. this was not a long term solution. but do not fear, i had an idea:

this idea was then delayed by about two weeks because we had no paint brushes in our house and home depot just isn’t on the way to anywhere i need to be these days. but finally, paint brushes were bought and chalkboard paint resurrected.

nothing like a quiet tuesday night to paint some jars and watch the daily show by myself. i even resisted peeling off the tape too early (which i always do) and let the jars sit overnight. what a glorious morning it was to rip off the tape and judge the straightness of my lines (about an 85% success rate).

and then the labeling. oh the labeling. why is it that i can garner so much satisfaction from such little and insignificant tasks? i don’t know, but i am officially pleased.

more jar collecting, chalkboard painting, and labeling in my future. i just wish we had a pantry with a glass door so i can display my work. perhaps that will be on the requirement list for our future abodes.
