i shared photos of our new kitchen with you last week, and i’ll slowly add other rooms as the walls get painted, the furniture is placed, and things are hung on the wall. we spent the majority of this weekend working on just that. our house has 1 1/2 baths, and we decided to tackle the full bath that’s upstairs first.

the bathroom has cream yellow and black tile, which wouldn’t be my first choice when picking tile, but i have to admit it’s kind of grown on me. the day we moved in, we threw our old shower curtain and towels in the bathroom so we could actually use the shower. it looked insane.

the toilet was also running pretty consistently, so we knew we had to replace the [insert correct toilet part here]. but here’s where it gets a little more complicated. you see, this house was built in 1938, and these toilets are original (or at least very close). all the pieces inside are metal and have been corroding for the last 70 years. so what should have been a 30 minute task to remove tank, unscrew thing [as you can see, i’m very technical], replace leaky metal valve with brand new plastic valve, screw toilet tank back on and continue on with our day.

unfortunately, there was no way to unscrew. two people’s strength could not move this thing, so we moved on to the next best option: buy a dremel and literally cut it off. adventures in home ownership begin!

safety first my friends: ski goggles, head lamp, and face mask. also please excuse our garage, this is currently the staging area for any projects and things that don’t have a home yet. the picture on the right is jason’s victory stance after battling with the toilet for over three hours.

anyways, the tank went back on, we tested flushing (no leaks) and put up the new curtains, rugs, and towels. see what i mean, the yellow tile kind of works. at least for now.

Jason’s victory pose is my favorite. Shower curtain, rugs and towels look great. Good color choice. And I don’t mind the ‘subway’ tile. Maybe because my parent’s house has the exact same bathroom tile :)
